John’s Books

Over time, I have promoted a number of my own books on this blog, such as my commercially published titles on mythology (The Great God Pan; Aphrodite- The Goddess of Modern Love and Dance, Love and Ecstasy- The Modern Cult of Dionysos, all of which were published by Green Magic Publishing). The same publisher, Green Magic, has also published many of my books on British faery-lore, along with Llewellyn International.

I have also mentioned various titles I have self-published, most recently Waiting for Utopia, as well as various books on classical mythology such as nymphs, satyrs and sirens.

Additionally, I have written a number of studies of art history. Some of these are available to purchase as commercial books:

  • Eat Me! When Alice Grew Up is a study of the use of the character ‘Alice’ as a symbol and agent in fine art, the graphic arts and literature since the publication of Lewis Carroll’s two Alice books. Published through Amazon/ KDP and is available as a Kindle book and paperback; and,
  • Cherry Ripe- Decadence, Classicism and Fantasy in Late Victorian Art– a study of some common themes and images of the feminine to be found in the neo-classical and fantasy art of the late Victorian period, published through Amazon/KDP;

Some of my other titles are in the process of revision at present, but I have decided to make copies of some these available to interested individuals by offering pdf versions of these texts. If you would be interested in any of these, please contact me through the blog. The titles in question are:

  • The Voyage to the Isle of Venus- Greuze, de Sade & Enlightenment Libertinism– an essay that examines the libertine attitudes in literature (de Sade, Byron and others) and in the visual arts (painters such as Greuze and Fragonard or sculptors such as Clodion); and,
  • ‘In the Garden of Eros’- Illustrators & Orientalists in Early Twentieth Century Art– a study of the erotic book illustrations of early twentieth century France (such as in the works of Pierre Louys) that also compares this output to wide trends and attitudes manifested in art, especially the ‘Orientalist’ school.

In addition, I have been working for some time on a study comparing and contrasting the work of Pierre Louys and Felix Salten. I have written extensively about the novels and poetry of Louys; Salten is best known for Bambi, but his first novel, The Memoires of Josephine Mutzenbacher, is of a style very similar to much of the contemporary output of Louys, so that an analysis of both seemed productive. The two authors’ works are discussed in detail, with a focus upon setting them in their literary and social contexts, the better to understand their themes and concerns. The book is a work in progress, but a PDF version is available for purchase upon request. Please e-mail for details.

If you would be interested in any of these titles, or require any more information about them, please contact me through the blog. See too my Academia page for a number of downloads- primarily by series of over twenty essays looking at varying aspects of the work of the author Pierre Louys.
